Optical spectral monitors that monitor a range of parameters are valuable for the management of optical networks. However, they require fine spectral resolution, otherwise, the measured spectra are blurred, preventing such parameters being determined. In this letter, we demonstrate how the regularized structured total least squares signal processing method can be used to successfully reverse this blurring. Its application relaxes the required resolution for optical spectral monitors with subsequent benefits of increased robustness and reduced cost. © 2008 IEEE.
